I started pupillage at Outer Temple Chambers in 2005. No-one at either the Bar or in Chambers did anything to make me think that they would have any issue with my sexuality and I’m sure that my intention from the start was to be open. But for some reason I wasn’t. This was probably partly due to the fact that the Bar was still quite an old fashioned and traditional place.
Fifteen years later and I recently introduced my colleagues to my son. He was just a few months old and had been born via a surrogate in the US. I was in the middle of 7 months’ parental leave. I’ve been to two same sex marriages involving members of Chambers and I was asked to write this profile by one of our pupils, Oscar Davies.
Times have changed.
